7 Tips for Encouraging Pets to Take Medicine

As a pet owner, there comes a time that you will need to give your pet medicine. Not all pets take medicine well and may struggle or hide when the time comes. Here are 7 different tips to help get your pets to take medicine.

  1. Seek out a pharmacy –

If the medicine you need to get your pet is something you need to get from a compound pharmacy, check and see if they will flavor the medicine. Flavoring the medicine can be very helpful to get your pet to take their medicine, as they will think of it more like a treat.

  1. Try pill pockets or other soft treats –

There is a brand of pet treats just meant for this very purpose. They are flavored treats with a little pocket for you to put in the pill. Animals tend to take pills a lot easier with the help of these treats. You could do something similar with whatever soft dog treat your dog is into. There won’t be a pre-made pocket but as long as the treat is soft it will mold itself around the pill.

  1. Try to soothe –

A little encouragement may help your pet take their medicine better. Pet them, tell them they are a good boy or girl and make sure they are all relaxed first. If you go right into trying to put a pill in their mouth, chances are it will be harder to give them medicine.

  1. Hide it in food –

If the pill is small enough, you can take it and put it in a little cube of cheese or wrap it in a little lunchmeat. Your pet will be excited about the treat; they may not notice the pill inside.

  1. Stir it in their food –

If you have a small enough pill or a capsule – you may be able to hide it in their wet canned food. A little pill you can just stir it right in and it will start to dissolve. But, with a capsule you will need to open up and stir in the powder. Be sure to check with your veterinarian before doing this, as certain pills may not be meant to be ingested in that manner.

  1. Swaddle –

Swaddling or wrapping with a towel or blanket can be very helpful when trying to give medicine by yourself. It helps the animal stay still and be calm while you do what you need to do.

  1. Get help –

Ask a friend or family member to help you gently hold your animal while you open their mouth. Never be forceful with your animal, everything should be gently and not at all scary to the animal.

Giving your pet medicine can be difficult at times, but it doesn’t have to be. With these tips, you can give your pet medicine hassle free.
